Yesterday we saw how photography terms align perfectly. Today, let's plug in the amp and look at music.
We will learn how to say "to play an instrument" and see another massive phonetic twin word.
1. The Sonic Vocabulary
In both languages, the word for "Music" is almost a perfect carbon copy:
Music (English)
音楽 / おんがく (Ongaku - JP) \n 음악 (Eum-ak - KR)
Sound (English)
音 / おと (Oto - JP) \n 소ri (Sori - KR)
2. Action Verbs: Playing Strings/Keys
When you play a stringed instrument (like a guitar) or a keyboard, the verbs differ slightly but the structure remains completely locked in SOV:
- Japanese: uses the verb 弾く (ひく - hiku)
- Korean: uses the multi-purpose action verb 치다 (chida) (yang berarti memukul/memetik/memainkan)
Let's build the phrase "Play the guitar":
- JP: ギターを弾く (Gitā o hiku)
- KR: 기타를 치다 (Gita reul chida)
Tip: Notice how 'Guitar' is just phonetically adapted from English in both cultures (ギター vs 기타)!
